Why do you continue to renew your CLMA membership?
CLMA provides consistent and relevant educational opportunities, professional development resources and networking connections that help me grow as a laboratory leader. Volunteering for chapter and national committees and leadership positions has increased my network capital, providing insightful relationships and new opportunities.

How has CLMA assisted in advancing your career as a laboratory leader?
As a new member, I was given an opportunity by my chapter to attend the KnowledgeLab conference with a scholarship. This opportunity was eye-opening for me as a new member and quickly showed the immense value of the CLMA membership. Upon returning from the conference, I presented to our chapter what I had taken from the experience. It just so happened, there was a member in the audience that was looking for a new manager. She reached out to me the next day and I found my first laboratory leadership position within a month. CLMA provides a network that allows members who are serious about lab leadership to pursue career advancement.

Why is CLMA’s annual conference, KnowledgeLab, a valuable experience for lab leaders?
KnowledgeLab has done multiple things for my career advancement and professional development. The educational opportunities are vast. Adding SAFMLS to the itinerary has provided greater perspective and diversity to the educational programming. This is also the one opportunity that I have as a lab leader to connect with vendors. Whether I am discussing issues or concerns with my current contracts or vetting new opportunities and resources, KnowledgeLab brings the industries best to the convention. Lastly, I cannot express enough the power of networking. Chapter networking events can only extend your network so far geographically. KnowledgeLab allows you to create relationships and resources internationally, giving you more tools to improve and advance your career.

If you could sum up why you are a CLMA member in one sentence, what would it be?
CLMA provides the educational resources, industry experts, and networking connections to allow members an opportunity to advance their career in laboratory management.

What advice do you have for someone who is on the fence about joining CLMA?
While many lab professional organizations are narrowly focused on clinical pathways or CLS education, CLMA provides current and future leaders the resources that bind the laboratory together. Healthcare is changing, and so is the way we run our labs. CLMA has the expertise and connections to share best industry practices and help members manage the uncertainty of what is to come.

Sean’s favorite CLMA resource: CLMA’s Body of Knowledge resource is the encyclopedia to laboratory management. Whether you are studying for your DLM, getting into your first leadership role or have years of experience, the Body of Knowledge has the resources to help advance your career.

Provided opportunities to network, to learn and to grow in my laboratory career.

Why is CLMA’s annual conference, KnowledgeLab, a valuable experience for lab leaders?
Would have to say (again!) the networking. Meeting laboratory personnel from all over the U.S. in a variety of lab settings—we learn from each other and bring back valuable information to improve the labs we work in.

People are the most important asset in the laboratory—invest in yourself and others—CLMA membership provides opportunities for exactly this.

To stay connected with other laboratorians, to network for potential opportunities to return to working in a clinical lab leadership role in the future and to support the educational goals of the organization.

How has CLMA assisted in advancing your career as a laboratory leader?
I’ve met many wonderful lab leaders in my years of membership, at professional meetings and in local lab settings. I was also able to add value by providing an educational presentation on a relevant topic when I was in a former diagnostic sales role with another company, in an objective manner that allowed CLMA to provide PACE CEUs with it.

I am a CLMA member so that I can stay connected to other lab leaders and serve the greater lab community by supporting continuing education programs.

Becoming a member of CLMA has helped me to identify my own opportunities for improvement as a laboratory leader. Reviewing the Body of Knowledge serves as a reminder to pursue continuing education opportunities and stay connected with changes and advances in the field of laboratory science.

Why is CLMA’s annual conference, KnowledgeLab, a valuable experience for lab leaders?
I would say the most valuable experience for me was presenting at one of the conferences. Presenting gave me the opportunity to share accomplishments in a supportive environment and gain valuable feedback. I also learned from this that the more you put in to CLMA, the more you will get out of it.

Why do you continue to renew your CLMA membership?
It took several years before a colleague brought CLMA to my attention. I went to my first ThinkLab conference (the predecessor of KnowledgeLab) and was hooked. I saw, and continue to see, the value of CLMA membership – to me and to my organization. CLMA provides me with a professional organization where I can share knowledge and information about laboratory leadership with colleagues and improve my skillset. It enables me to meet a large number of like-minded professionals, and to develop professional relationships as well as friendships. While I belong to several other laboratory organizations purely for the technical knowledge I gain there, CLMA allows me to develop both as a leader and as a person in our profession. My membership is something that to me is not an expense, but rather an investment in myself and our profession.

How has CLMA assisted in advancing your career as a laboratory leader?
Starting at the chapter level and advancing to the international, CLMA has exposed me to new and exciting concepts and skills in leading our profession. The laboratory field is experiencing ever increasing challenges and obstacles, and the education I get from CLMA is far and above any other which is currently offered. Additionally, I have a cohort of colleagues who are excited to share their experiences and advice, as I am with them, in order to overcome these challenges most expeditiously. What I have learned about laboratory leadership, and those I have met along the learning path are invaluable in my success.

Why is CLMA’s annual conference, KnowledgeLab, a valuable experience for lab leaders?
While we characterize KnowledgeLab as our annual meeting, it is much more than that – it’s a professional meeting, a trade show which showcases new instrumentation, equipment, supplies and services and an informal “retreat” where old friends are reconnected with and new friends are made. It is the one meeting that I consistently attend annually – because it is so valuable!

If you could sum up why you are a CLMA member in one sentence, what would it be?
As a professional laboratory leader, membership and participation in CLMA helps me to be the highest quality leader that I can be and one that my employees, organization, profession and our patients both need and deserve.

What advice do you have for someone who is on the fence about joining CLMA?
Like Nike says – “Just Do It”! You can come up with a plethora of reasons NOT to join… but you will find no greater value in developing yourself as a leader and allowing yourself to share your skills with others for the betterment of our common profession.

Joe’s favorite CLMA resource: The CLMA Body of Knowledge! As one of the characteristics of a profession, a body of knowledge, such as we have, is a road map for practitioners of the science (and art) of laboratory leadership. It’s something which I have used for myself in order to progress through the pathway of leadership, and something that I freely share with subordinates and peers to help them along their journey.

Why do you continue to renew your CLMA membership?
CLMA is an ethical and professional association that is committed to educating, training and grooming laboratory leaders. No other association is committed to the laboratory in the same way. While professional organizations struggle with membership, CLMA continues to remain focused, not compromising the mission to make the numbers.

How has CLMA assisted in advancing your career as a laboratory leader?
CLMA offers a variety of educational forums for laboratory leaders. As a new leader, having the role model of many of the CLMA board members and long-term members was helpful. As a seasoned leader, CLMA gives the opportunity to be able to give back some of what I have learned and experienced over the years to those coming up through the ranks.

Why is CLMA’s annual conference, KnowledgeLab, a valuable experience for lab leaders?
KnowledgeLab has provided both educational and networking experiences for me in one venue. Diverse and high-quality speakers, workshop variety, leadership training and access to peers in order to share best practices are positive features of KnowledgeLab.

If you could sum up why you are a CLMA member in one sentence, what would it be?
CLMA sets the standard in the industry as the single source for clinical laboratory advocacy, information, education, and programming that leads to individual growth.

What advice do you have for someone who is on the fence about joining CLMA?
If you are undecided about joining CLMA, you have to try it for yourself. Everyone has an opinion, but until you experience membership for yourself, you don’t know what the tangible benefits are. Remember that with membership in any professional association, including CLMA, you must be committed to put yourself into the association in order to get benefit out of it.
