Deadline Approaches
Official Notification from CLMA President
You will recall from the October President's Perspective that CLMA has set the course for our future through execution of a new Strategic Plan for our organization.  One of the strategic objectives identified in that plan is to commission a Governance Task Force (GTF) to review the current CLMA governance structure and make recommendations to increase its alignment with the Strategic Plan.

After a great deal of thought and careful deliberation with input from the Board of Directors (BOD), members, and analysis of other association practices, the GTF submitted a set of recommended changes to modify the existing BOD and Executive Committee structures.  The objective of these changes is to create a more efficient, nimble organizational structure…Read More.

Management in Action: By Ron Pickett
Successful Delegation!
What does it mean "to delegate"? Technically delegation involves granting someone the authority to act on your behalf; it's what we do when we elect our representatives and other public officials. The concept implies giving away a part of our managerial responsibilities. It does not include routine tasks that are a part of the person's job. Read more.

What Does a Laboratory Leader Look Like?
This month: Humbelina Harper
Humbelina Harper is the Phlebotomy Coordinator at Lawrence Memorial Hospital which is a community full-service hospital in Lawrence, Kansas. She joined CLMA last summer and is actively helping develop the young members survey that will be presented in the near future. "I am passionate about finding people and getting them interested in a lab career," Harper said. "As we all know, the shortage is only getting worse. I don't want to be left alone running a lab 10 years from now." Read More.

Lyle Rosser Jr. Scholarship application deadline is January 18th
CLMA is proud to once again offer The Lyle Rosser, Jr. Continuing Education Scholarship to ThinkLab '08! Through the generous support of BD, 10 laboratory professionals who do not have the financial support needed to attend will be able to take advantage of all the opportunities ThinkLab '08 has to offer.

This need-based, full scholarship covers registration, airfare, lodging, and meals for the duration of the conference. However, even more valuable than covering these costs, the scholarship gives recipients the opportunity to gather the knowledge necessary to stay up to date with the latest trends, technology, and practices within the laboratory industry.

Why All Laboratorians Should Contribute to Clinical Leadership & Management Review And Vantage Point
Share your knowledge and insights with your laboratory colleagues around the country: Write for CLMR or Vantage Point. For writing instructions, click here.

The top 10 reasons why laboratorians should write:
10. Laboratorians have superb technical skills and can solve any problem they come across.
9. Laboratorians need to share solutions to technical problems with other laboratorians.
8. Laboratorians need to hone their professional skills.
7. Laboratorians need to expand their capacity in the area of communication skills.
6. Writing is a learned communication skill.
5. The more a writer writes, the more the quality of the writing improves.
4. Politicians do not know what laboratorians do (or the role they play in health care) and you can tell them by writing articles.
3. The public (outside laboratory medicine and health care) does not know what laboratorians do (or the role they play in health care) and you can tell your story by writing articles.
2. Other members of the health-care team do not know what laboratorians do (or the role they play in patient care) and you can enhance the visibility of the clinical laboratory in your workplace by writing articles and then letting other members of the health-care team know about the articles.
1. We have a lot to say and we need to step up to the plate and say it.

The top 10 reasons why laboratorians make great writers (caution: humor!):
10. We never quit revising the draft until we have it right (or the deadline hits).
9. We never quit calling editors until we get a ‘‘yes.’’
8. We solve all our hardware technology problems by ourselves.
7. We solve all our software compatibility problems by ourselves.
6. Writing is a learned communication skill.
5. We pay so much attention to detail that the publication saves on copyediting costs because we do almost all of it all ourselves.
4. We focus on the task in spite of ringing phones, budget deadlines, the siren lure of e-mail, personnel evaluations, and colleagues dropping dead on the job.
3. We ruthlessly are logical and can apply our critical thinking skills to writing with as much vigor as if we were trying to solve a quality control problem.
2. We have a lot to say.
1. We never quit until we have finished saying it.
