Strategies to Reach Quality, Services, and Financial Goals for Laboratories
Robert O. Stallone, Vice President, Laboratories, North Shore - LIJ Health System Laboratories
Today's laboratory environment is one of declining reimbursement, payer and provider consolidation, and increasing demand for service and quality. In light of the continued decrease in qualified staff and the intensifying of industry competition, it becomes critical for laboratory managers to adapt and implement the best practice strategies available.
Learning Objectives:
- Name the structure models available for the integration of labs within a health system.
- Describe the different methods to drive integration, improve performance, and change culture.
- Discuss how North Shore used Six Sigma and Lean Process methodologies to drive change.
- List the key elements for successful outreach and growth.
Tuesday, April 1, 2008 3:00 – 4:00 PM (Eastern Standard Time) – THIS LECTURE HAS BEEN CANCELLED. ALL REGISTERED SITES WILL RECEIVE A FULL REFUND.
Quality Management in Action
Julian David King, MT(ASCP), Manager, Microbiology/QA/QI/Molecular Development, University Hospital
The relationship between Quality Management (QM) and the 12 Quality System Essentials (QSEs) has become the vehicle through which laboratories attempt to comply with The Joint Commission’s standards dictating patient-care safety goals.
Pressure on laboratories to search for creative and simplistic ways to monitor quality and measure results is rapidly increasing. The fact that QM projects are multidisciplinary in nature, involving the laboratory and other patient-care departments, further impedes this process. With staffing and cost containment issues thrown into the mix, it is important for labs to design quality projects that produce accurate results. This session will discuss specific quality monitors that reflect the 12 QSEs and directly relate to patient-care safety goals.
Learning Objectives:
- Implement successful QM projects that include other departments involved in patient care.
- Recognize successful examples of QM projects that produce results, are easily measured, and reflect patient-care safety goals.
- Relate the discussed QM projects to the 12 QSEs and construct Quality Monitors that associate directly to the scope of testing and activities in your own laboratory.
