CMS: Place of Service Implementation Delay

The CLMA Medicare Billing Issues Committee (MBIC) is pleased to report that CMS has issued program transmittal R2561CP CR 7631 that extends the implementation date for the changes in reporting Place of Service for claims paid under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) which includes certain laboratory and pathology claims. The new effective and implementation dates are April 1, 2013.

The transmittal, titled "Revised and Clarified Place of Service (POS) Coding Instructions” is the latest in a string of transmittals addressing this subject as CMS tries to respond to provider and supplier comments, complaints and suggestions. This 40 page transmittal does a lot more clarifying than just the Place of Service (POS) issue, however, labs will still have to wait for our clarification. According to this transmittal, "Clarification on the POS for pathology services will be provided through another CR”. Even though there is not much for labs here, there is much to read.
